Its shameful that Government is in such a hurry to implement Quota for Political Reasons that it doesn't even cares if sufficient infrastructure is there or not.

Yeah, currently there is a construction going on. Expected date of completion is in June 2011. In the end it is suppose to be a 7 floor building with lots of rooms. Let's hope the best that the construction is sped up a bit (currently the 3rd floor is being constructed).

hmm..i hope that these are temporary..i believe IISc is constructing new hostel wings..so once they take shape I guess things would be better..some sacrifice for a better future i suppose..

anyways..the lack of coordination is typical..as long as there is no accountability people wont put their mind to look at the whole problem holistically..

I am not sure but if you guys have some channels for feedback like meetings or discussion forums where the top managers in administration can interact with student/staff unions then I think you can keep them in the loop with what you think about their "ideas"..I am sure they wont take the feedback/suggestions from the best brains in the country lightly..

Hey Pupun,

Academically IISc is one of the best institutes in India. Courses are great and professors know, what they are talking about. So, you will learn a lot, once you enrolled as a student in IISc.

However student's life does not consist of the academics only. On the other side there must be recreation time, in which you recharge your battery and can spend time with friends, do sports, watch TV or whatever. It does not differ much from being an employee, who goes home after work.

This is the ideal case and if there is a problem, the administration (that is the hostel office, students academic section etc.) will be happy to help. However this is not the case in IISc. I'll give you an example that happened around a year ago (you can have also mail ID of this guy, if you do not believe me):

A friend of mine did not get scholarship. Ok, he went to financial section to sort it out. That it took him the next 8 months to solve this problem, nobody would have expected. Every day he went to financial section, since he had to borrow money from us to buy food. This is very much disturbing and tiring.

The attitude of the clerks here is most of the time simply annoying. They are government employees, so they can only be shifted at maximum, but not fired. Have a look here:
http://www.fell.it/2009/05/25/strike-in-iisc/ it shows the general attitude nicely. These are just the major stories. There are also tiny little things, which I do not bother to write down anymore.

So, if you think, you can handle it (do not worry, you are not alone and we are all in the same boat. If help is required, it is received), then you get a really good education. Unfortunately I cannot tell anything about the other institutes, it might be the same there too. It even might not happen that you will not experience any of the administration glitches.

But what I want to tell is, that IISc does not mean, it is heaven. Every year I can see the freshers coming to this institute, mouth open in astonishment, eyes in tears due to unbelieved luck, and unable to speak properly due to excitement. After 6 months you ask anybody in this institute, if the excitement in the beginning was justified or about their experience. That's why I am saying: "Not everything that shines, is made of gold."

Did you get admission in IISc? If so, then come. It is most likely not half as dramatic as it is read here. See, we (the students) survived everything so far.... :D

It has only DDR2.
But in the end it does not matter so much. At least I do not see any difference between the old nVidia and the new ATI.

Actually since I am not affected by this shortage of rooms nor does not anybody who I know here (yet), I do not regret anything. However I feel sorry for the new arrivals, because they have to suffer and they do not even know till they arrive. And it is not their fault either.

What I would like to show is that there is a huge communication gap/misunderstanding/lack of understanding among the students/faculty on one side and the administration on the other. Anyhow, I am always curious what new ideas come from the administration. It is always a surprise and most of the times entertaining (to be honest). However recently I started asking myself, if it is like this everywhere (e.g. in the IITs).

Man..I feel pity..I dont know how much of your energy are you forced to spend negatively on matters like these. (driving license, water problems, being the others)..

I am sure you must be regretting your decision to come over..

Anyways, hope these experiences make you a tougher man :) .Being able to live in any given conditions..

I ordered an ATI and a nVidia card from ebay in China. I think all the card come from the same guy. NVidia does not work, but the ATI card does.

Although the same guy sell the card, there is a huge difference in the prices varying between EUR35 and EUR50. Shipping charges were already included and it took something like 2 weeks to reach. Otherwise it was very easy and simple. I did not experienced any problems.

Sorry to hear about your struggle.
Certainly you can publish this story in your report. I also know of another one, who is staying in Kolkatta having the same problems. Long time that I heard anything from him. I am hoping, he is alright.
Good luck in Delhi (I was there last weekend).
